The Coronet Super Bee was a car that was introduced by Dodge in 1970 to join the family of performance street cars that included the Challenger and the Charger.

Regardless if Dodge wanted this car to be part of a group, the Coronet Super Bee stood out in originality. For instance, this model featured a new nose design that earned the attention of people who absolutely loved muscle cars.

Plus, Dodge rolled out new, exciting colors for the Coronet Super Bee alone. These paint colors were high impact and named Panther Pink and Plum Crazy. In fact, a major collector’s item is a Coronet Super Bee in Panther Pink, if you can find one of these, understand that you own one of the thirty-nine models that were ever made in this color.

Part of the reason that Dodge had all of these changes in 1970 was that the company was focused on revamping their image and wanted to add some edge to their otherwise utilitarian products. The company wanted to be new and hip and the Coronet reflected that. Unfortunately, the public of the time thought otherwise and Dodge sales that year fell by a third.

However, in today’s world, the unique styling of the Dodge cars, especially the Coronet Super Bee, is celebrated by enthusiasts; collectors are scrambling to preserve this unique car.

The 1966 Chevelle was a car that made General Motors proud. This car was very popular with the general public and car enthusiasts alike and was a big seller over the 1965 Chevelle partly because of the affordability this intermediate car offered and because of the changes that were made to it during this model year.

Much of the popularity surrounding this car came from the fact that in 1966 General Motors redesigned the body of the Chevelle, giving this model more curves and moving away from the angular, boxy styling of previous years. This change was received well and in this particular year the car company made over 400,000 of this particular model, with over 70,000 of that total being the sleek Super Sport.

The 1966 Chevelle SS was the high performance version of this car. It came with a 325 hp turbo-jet V-8 and offered the opportunity for an engine upgrade should the consumer so wish. In addition, it also came with many features, such as twin simulated hood air intakes, a blacked out grill, and fender moldings.

Car and Driver magazine reported that the 1966 Chevelle “handled very nicely and was a ball to drive.”

This is a model that is still celebrated by enthusiasts. This car has earned its place in history.

The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro has many car enthusiasts feeling as if they traveled back in time to the 1960’s. The make of the 2009 Camaro came out because Ford introduced the new styling on the Mustang. Therefore, it was time for Chevy and Dodge to compete with pony cars of their own. Dodge wasted no time in reintroducing the Dodge Challenger and Chevy decided to take it upon themselves to dust off the styling of the 1969 Camaro and give it some modern “zing.” What is fabulous is that the Camaro has lost nothing over the past forty years and this car blends all of the new technology available with the shell of a classic muscle car.

It is no surprise that the changes to the body of the Camaro were inspired by an actual fighter jet. The body is angular and sleek and you can almost picture it with wings.

However, the interior was inspired by the 1969 Camaro and unfortunately; it is not Chevy’s best effort. Compared to the new console styling on many modern cars, this instrument panel is a little old fashioned.

Regardless of the interior, it still has to be said that the 2009 Chevy Camaro does a good job of bringing back the retro feel of the pony cars of the 1960’s. Compared to the Mustang, the Camaro injects some modern features and style into this classic car.

The 1968 GTO was well received when it was initially rolled out in this model year. Part of the reason behind this was that General Motors redesigned much about this car both in engineering and looks. General Motors very much wanted to introduce the GTO as a high performance car and they succeeded in doing this within the muscle car community.

General Motors made the 1968 GTO sleeker and shorter. They trimmed the length of the body but kept the wheelbase the same. In addition, they gave the car a more curvaceous look which appealed to many enthusiasts.

Engine options remained the same as they did in 1967 models. However, General Motors did introduce some options when it came to other parts of the car. For instance, this was the first year that concealed windshield wipers were offered on a North American car brand. This feature was already available in European cars and was widely popular. Many people took advantage of this option because of the overall look it gave to the car.

In addition, another option that received a lot of attention was the hood mounted tachometer. There was an option for an in dash tachometer, but it was the hood mounted version that people were crazy about.

Finally, in 1968 the GTO ended up winning Motor Trend’s Car of the Year Award and the high sales of this car solidified its standing.

The changes made to the GTX in 1969 were relatively minor. While this was a popular car, its sales were not what they should have been. However, this had little to do with the overall styling and more to do with the fact that the Road Runner was introduced this year and was significantly less expensive.

Regardless of the statistics, the 1969 GTX is a sharp car that offered many options to car lovers. 1969 was the last year that the convertible option on the GTX was offered and that model is a serious collector’s item.

As far as other changes went on the GTX, the grill and the taillights were updated, giving the car an interesting front and back end over other model years.

Engine options stayed the same with the standard 440 cubic inch 375 hp big block engine and the 425 hp 426 cubic inch Hemi. As far as engineered changes went, the GTX did receive an upgraded suspension for performance and bigger brakes. These were two changes that were welcomed by the racing community.

All in all, there was relatively little news about the GTX in 1969. Today, some models are heavily sought after, but it is found that the Road Runner is still the preferred choice from Plymouth in 1969.

It just so happens that muscle car enthusiasts love the 1970 Dodge Challenger. This car is touted as being the last pony car to compete in a very crowded market and the Challenger was the luxury model of its sister car, the Plymouth Cuda.

The 1970 Challenger, when originally released, gave the consumer the option of several different styles and versions. There was the Deputy Challenger which was the budget version of this car as well as the Special Edition that flouted a souped up engine and transmission as well as bucket seats and overhead console. The Special Edition also came with a souped up price tag for 1970.

This particular car and body style ran for a total of five years and the 1970 model year was very popular amongst enthusiasts. In fact, in 2008 Chrysler revived the pony car styling on the 1970 Challenger and injected the style into the re-released Challenger in that model year.

Over time, the 1970 Dodge Challenger got the reputation for being a muscle car and the TA and the R/T were paid particular attention by collectors and enthusiasts. There were ten different engine choices originally available and three different transmission choices, this really allowed a car buyer to build a car that had all of their specifications in it.

There is no denying that 1970 was a huge year for Detroit and for the muscle cars to come out of the Motor City. This was exhibited by all of the major car companies and consumers had never before seen some of the power and speed that was now being touted in the cars that rode on the streets.

One company in particular that garnered headlines in 1970 was General Motors. The car company removed the 400-cid limit on all of its intermediate cars in 1970 and this paved the way for Buick to develop the Gran Sport. This car was based on its former intermediate offering in the Skylark, but the Gran Sport got a fresh makeover in body styling. The company added two inches of body length while keeping the wheelbase the same.

In addition, Buick made some internal changes on the engine offering and the GS 455 V-8 replaced the 400-cid V-8.

Buick also ramped up the attraction on the Gran Sport by offering a variety of additional colors and customizable racing stripes and spoilers. These features solidified the idea that the Gran Sport was a true muscle car and Motor Trend magazine christened this car “the quickest American production car we have ever tested.”

In 1970, Plymouth changed the body style of the Barracuda and rolled out a true muscle car that had a long hood and short rear deck. This car truly had versatility; because it was bigger, both in length and width than previous model years, it could now fit any big block engine offering of Plymouth’s under the hood, from the Hemi to the 440ci, consumers had their choice.

The Plymouth Barracuda was essentially the lower end sister of the 1970 Dodge Challenger, however, regardless if the car was less expensive; it gave nothing up in performance and handling and the ‘Cuda model was incredibly popular amongst muscle car lovers.

The ‘Cuda in particular was a track dominator and the car had some serious speed. In fact, one of the major drawbacks to the styling of this car had nothing to do with the makeup of the car itself; rather the extra weight was in the engine. When the ‘Cuda was outfitted with the Hemi, extra weight was added and the car did not handle as well. Unfortunately, that was a sign of the times, the big block engines, regardless of power were not engineered for performance handling.

While 1970 was a stellar year for muscle cars, the Barracuda wasn’t a spectacular seller because of technological limitations of that moment.

The 2010 Corvette Grand Sport was originally envisioned by legendary Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov and this car was touted back in the 1960’s as a factory-built, race ready model that would easily outlast other domestic and foreign race-specific competitors. Although this car was never commissioned by General Motors to do so, original prototypes of the Corvette saw race time and performed accordingly.

The Corvette Grand Sport is a classic, high performance, muscle car. Therefore, it is only fitting that General Motors brought this car back to be added to its 2010 line up. The new model combines several characteristics, both in engineering and styling that provide a great combination for both the road and the race track.

The new Corvette Grand Sport replaces the Corvette’s Z51 offering and gives the car lover a greater degree of performance handling. The 2010 Corvette Grand Sport has wider wheels and tires and a wider body styling to offer better suspension and support for road and racing track performance. This car comes with the ability to choose the engine and transmission that will suit your particular needs best as well as an exhaust system that is typically only found on high performance race cars.

The Corvette Grand Sport is an iconic car that is finding itself at home, roaring into 2010.

One of the best muscle cars around is the 1969 Camaro by Chevrolet. This car was a really hot seller in its model year and a testament to the Big Three automaker.

It just so happens that 1969 marked the last year this particular body style was offered by the carmaker. In addition, sales of 1969 Camaro were helped by the fact that the 1970 Camaro was delayed in its release. This might have contributed to the fact that the 1969 Camaro is considered one of the best and most popular styles by collectors. In fact, through comparison it is easy to see how the 2009 model of this car was influenced by its predecessor.

This particular car was different from many others of its time and Chevy prided itself on the long, low look that appealed to car aficionados and drag racers alike. The varying engines a buyer could have placed in this car sealed the fact that this car was pure American muscle.

The top speed for the four speed manual transmission clocked in at 120 mph and the Z28 of this model was incredibly popular amongst the road racing crowd. There were some suspension components that were required on this car if you planned on really pushing the envelope and that was specifically to avoid some of the “hop” that could be kicked from this car.

The 1969 Camaro is a force to be reckoned with, both back in the day and to the enthusiast who is interested in working on this classic. It offers the type of classic muscle that is often imitated, but never duplicated.
